Designing a better ride from request to arrival

Ride-hailing looks simple on the surface, but the experience involves two users trying to accomplish different things at the same time. Riders want to find a reliable driver quickly, understand where their driver is, and know what to expect from the journey. Drivers need clear information, efficient matching, and a simple way to manage trips without unnecessary interaction while on the road.

I approached Vroom as a two-sided product rather than designing a rider app in isolation. The goal was to create a connected experience where both sides could move through a trip with as little friction as possible.

Simplifying the rider journey

I focused the rider experience around the core moments that matter most:

Where am I going?

Who is picking me up?

Where is my driver?

What will my trip cost?

What happens next?

The interface was designed to surface these answers at the right moment, using clear hierarchy and real-time information instead of overwhelming users with unnecessary detail.

Designing around real-time information

Real-time tracking became a central part of the experience. Rather than treating the map as decoration, I used it as an active part of the journey, helping riders understand driver location, pickup progress, and trip status.

This created a clearer sense of control and reduced the uncertainty that can come with waiting for a ride.
